On surgery

This year I dealt with a second shoulder repair.

Perhaps its time to address the elephant in the operating room; CrossFit and dynamic exercises like olympic lifts, gymnastics, and most specifically--kipping.

The first time I tore a shoulder was a dramatic event, slipped while pressing out a muscle up and held on with one hand instead of slamming face first into the rig holding the rings. It was a split second decision, but a conscious one. I knew I'd take a hard hit to the face vice not knowing how I would fare and wound up giving myself a high-speed low-drag full-force body-weight kimura on the shoulder which was still holding the ring.

Fast forward two years.

It's a global pandemic, I'm in month 3 of lock down or so, and I'm not eating well, sleeping well or leaving my home. So really it's just everyone's favorite: 2020.

The workouts I'm doing are from our affiliate, and they're generally within my range. But I'm drinking too much, and sleeping poorly, and really not giving myself the love before and after workouts that a 44 y/o north american male deserves. So, there goes the set up. The WOD was something I'd done a million times, handstand push ups and deadlifts (incidentally Diane was my first CF workout). The deadlifts felt too heavy, the HSPUs made me feel heavy (I was) but my mind was just not interested in seeing any of the signs or listening to my in home L2 coach of a wife (she is awesome and I TRULY RAGRET that slip in heeding her).

So, it took awhile to admit it was a tear and not sore. It took longer to get appointments and referrals, more time again for x-rays and MRIs. Surgery took quarantine, trust, and solitude. Physical therapy shows masked and merciless. Progress started fast and has hit halts and fits of pain and stiffness.

So 2020, so ready to be whole again, for all of us to do a workout together again. High fives and occasional hugs will be there for all.

Ready.
